Who Do You Pull For?

I moved to Raleigh in 1994 from Kingston, New York.  It was February and it was half way through my freshman year of high school.  I didn't know anyone.  Literally...no one except my parents and my younger brother.

I dressed differently, I talked differently, I acted differently.  People were curious.  Who is this kid?  I got the typical questions from those who were sizing me up.  What's your name?  Where are you from?  Blah blah blah.  But one of the questions I didn't anticipate (or know how to answer) was "Who do you pull for?"

Uh...... what?   Pull for?

After a couple Um's and a few Uh's, I learned I was being asked to choose sides.  Pledge my allegiance.  Take up arms and declare war...for a specific college sports team.  Was I a Tarheel?  A wolf?  A blue devil?  I grew up Catholic...I had no idea college basketball was a religion.

Once I figured out the question I said, "Well, I don't really know.  I like the Yankees and the Jets."  Which usually got a good laugh.  (maybe it was because of my northern accent but maybe it was because someone admitted to liking the Jets in the mid-90's).

The moral of the story?  Over the next few weeks, you will be asked to choose sides.  To pledge your allegiance.  To "pull for" one of our contestants and help them win $10,000!  Your votes count.  The first episode is only moments away and it will be your first introduction to all of our stars.

We want you to cheer on your favorite.  Be loud and supportive!  But unlike the college sports rivalries of Tobacco Road, we really hope you'll celebrate with us no matter who wins.
